Rome through the eyes of an art lover and mother

About Angelina

I love returning to Rome because the city feels different every time. Travelling there with Patrick was a very different experience from visiting later with our children, and that variety is exactly what makes Rome so special to me.

What I love about Rome is that every trip can have its own character. When you visit with children, you naturally look for different places, such as Zoomarine, Rainbow MagicLand or Explora Children's Museum. At the same time, the great monuments are just as impressive for children. The Colosseum remains extraordinary: right in the middle of the city, you suddenly stand in front of a huge amphitheatre from ancient Rome.

St Peter's Basilica also leaves a strong impression, not only because of its size, but because of all the symbolism and detail inside. And once you have climbed the dome, the view over Vatican City and Rome is absolutely worth the effort. As an art lover, I also never like to skip the museums. During my studies at the academy of art and design in 's-Hertogenbosch, we were encouraged to visit museums regularly. In Rome, GNAM and Galleria Borghese are among my favourites, both located in the beautiful Villa Borghese park.

Favourite Rome viewpoint

Terrazza del Pincio

The Terrazza del Pincio is my favourite spot in Rome. From this wide terrace, you look out over Piazza del Popolo, with the dome of St Peter's and Vatican City in the distance. There is almost always life around you, sometimes live music, and yet the atmosphere feels relaxed. For me, it is one of those places where Rome comes together for a moment.

Besides the art, history and culture, I also love Rome for something very simple: the pizza. Especially when you turn into a side street and sit down at a traditional pizzeria. The thin, crisp bases they make in Rome are hard to find anywhere else.

For me, that kind of pizza belongs to the city just as much as a museum visit, a walk through Villa Borghese or a viewpoint in the late afternoon. It is that mix of experiences that makes Rome worth returning to again and again.
